Tips for a Successful Senior Portrait Session!
The right clothing -- makes all the difference. Want MORE changes? We are in a world where more is usually considered better. However, this really does not apply for your senior session. Two or three great outfits are better than 10 average ones. Why take most of your shots in the other 7 or 8 outfits you don’t like as well as your 2-3 favorites? More clothing means fewer shots in each outfit. Quality is far better than quantity. The more outfits you have the more time you’ll spend changing and not in front of the camera.
Simplicity is the key when it comes to choosing an outfit. Solid colors other than white are best. Avoid large or bold patterns. They draw attention away from the face.
Coordinate your attire from head to toe, carefully selecting appropriate shoes and socks.
GIRLS - Wear the colors and outfits you feel best in. Dresses and sweaters are good for a more traditional look. Bright colors, skirts, jeans, capris or shorts look good for casual portraits. Avoid sleeveless or very short sleeves. Also avoid very short skirts or shorts.
GUYS - For more traditional portraits, a suit/sport coat with a tie or long-sleeve shirt and tie are good. For casual and outdoor photos, comfort is the rule. Jeans, khakis and shorts look great.
SHOES - Shoes may show, so they should compliment your clothing. We often suggest bare feet for some poses.
HAIR - Hair styling should be appropriate to the clothing selected. Avoid new hairstyles or having your hair cut or permed the week before your portrait session.
MAKE UP - Wear base make up. Pay attention to eyes, blush and lipstick. Those are three important features you want to emphasize in a portrait. Also, a translucent powder is helpful to eliminate shine.
NAILS - Please don't forget the importance of your hands in your portraits. Whether you choose to do your nails yourself or have them manicured, keep them clean and use coordinating colors.
FACIAL HAIR - Make sure that you are clean-shaven before your session. Retouching can hide blemishes but cannot fix razor stubble.
GLASSES - If you wear glasses most of the time, you may want to consider wearing them in your portraits. To eliminate glare or reflections, consider bringing empty frames or remove the lenses from your glasses. If you choose not to remove the lens, we can retouch most glass glare.
HANGERS OR BAG - Bring your clothing on hangers, clothing stuffed in a bag will photograph wrinkled.
PROPS? - Props are items that you frequently use or are seen with. How about sports equipment? Remember the helmet, ball, even shoulder pads & shoes. You don’t have to be totally serious -- have some fun. Feel free to spice it up. Hats, sun glasses, scarves and accessories -- maybe even your Letterman’s jacket. Also consider musical instruments such as guitars, flutes, harmonicas etc. And don’t forget about your car, truck or motorcycle.
PERSONALITY - Be yourself and have fun!
